Beginners Questions

Q.  I've never flown an RC model before.  Can I join?
A.  Yes.  All new members are welcome.  If you come down to the club on the weekend you can chat with the members, get some advice and learn the hobby in a safe and fun environment.

Q.  What is a good first plane for a beginner?
A.  It is recommended that you purchase a simulator first and practice before you spend money on a model.  A simulator will save you hours on repairs and a heap of money too!  Two simulators that are highly recommended include Pheonix Sim and Real Flight.  You can buy these from your local hobby store or online.  Once you have mastered the basics on the simulator you can get an EPO foam trainer like the Bixler or the J3 Cub.  Before you buy anything though come down and chat with the members.

Q. How old do you need to be to join?
A.  You can join at any age, however children under the age of 16 must be supervised by a responsible adult at all times.

Q.  Do I really need to be a member of the club?  Why cant I just come down and fly when nobody is there?
A.  Sutherland Shire Council has strict rules on the use of its fields.  Membership provides insurance and protects you and others from damage or injury.  Non-member flying at any the fields, during any time is strictly prohibited.  Council rangers have been know to confiscate RC aircraft on the spot and therefore you must carry your MAAA membership card at all times when flying.

Q.  Where can I read more about RC aircraft modeling?
A.  A great place to start is the MAAA (Model Aeronautical Association of Australia).   RC Groups is also a great online resource dedicated to sharing information relating to RC modeling.  There are of course many others.

Q. Do magpies like FPV aircraft shaped like giant eagles?
A. Ummm, we'll let you be the judge of that... watch
